PEDAGOGIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR A MIXED ABILITY GROUP

  • Divide students into groups as follows:

    • A  Struggling or unmotivated learners

    • B  Motivated learners

    • C  Advanced learners (or single students)

  • Follow the instructions given below for each group

A:  MATCHING EXERCISE FOR STRUGGLING OR UNMOTIVATED LEARNERS

(Easy pairwork, using: Worksheets 1a & 1b)

1.  Divide the pairs into A & B.  Instruct students to sit opposite their partner

2.  Students then fill the gaps by asking their partner for the missing word.  Words should be spelt out, not shown.

Objective:  ss absorb new vocabulary in a controlled exercise

B: GAPPED EXERCISE FOR MOTIVATED LEARNERS

(Pairwork plus dictionaries, using: Worksheet for exercise-2)

Instruct students to work with a neighbour to complete the gaps, using a dictionary

Objective:  ss discuss & discover new vocabulary

C: Test using Worksheet for exercise-3

Instruct students to work alone, then compare with their neighbour.  An extra exercise has been given for early-finishers

Objective:  ss revise old vocabulary and/or discover any shortfall in their knowledge

For single students, this exercise could be used as a matching exercise if used with the answer key.

FINALLY

TO CHECK ANSWERS & SPELLINGS

REGROUP STUDENTS INTO THREES TO INCLUDE ONE FROM EACH GROUP, SO THEY CAN PROVIDE EACH OTHER WITH THE RIGHT ANSWERS.

(NB:  Each group has one additional word)

Objective:  Listening & Speaking with all students involved, regardless of ability.  (students from groups B & C should ask students from group A for the answers and spellings.)
